What is a computer virus?
A computer virus is a computer program that can copy itself from computer to computer without the computer owner asking it to do so. While the term 'computer virus' is broad and can encompass a great deal of additional unwanted programs, it is important for the end-user to realise the damage they may cause, particularly at a personal level. Early generations of computer viruses generally copied themselves from computer to computer and in some cases they destroyed users data. More modern computer viruses have been designed with specific criminal goals in mind. As a home user you may be vulnerable to credit card number theft as a result of one of these viruses should you fail to protect your computer adequately by using anti-virus software and safe surfing.
How do we get rid of computer viruses?
Frequently, if you have antivirus software installed it will stop the virus in its tracks and you will never get to the stage of having a virus actually infect your computer. However, many viruses are designed to specifically disable antivirus or to work around the limitations of modern antivirus measures. When we start to repair a virus infected system we first backup all of your data so that your photos, documents, music, video etc is all kept safe. Where possible we remove the virus using a program which is designed to remove specific types of virus with the least amount of system disruption. In some cases the virus may be designed so that it damages the computer or your files when being removed. If this is the case we may have no choice but to reinstall your operating system and return it to the way it was when you bought it. In many cases this may be the most desirable outcome as your computer will speed up remarkable from this intervention and all of your files will be kept safe in our backup and be cleaned of any virus infections before being returned to your computer.
